The Lawless Family of Prince Edward Island, Canada

St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church
Little Pond, Prince Edward Island, Canada
The Lawless Family attended this church, build in 1863. It was an important part of their lives. Their children were baptized here. Several members of the family are buried in the cemetery to the left of the church. A small brochure commemorating the 125 year founding of the church states:
"The fifty by thirty foot wooden structure which has a twenty foot high post was built from local material, with the door latch and most of the nails being forged by John Lawless, a master blacksmith from Ireland, who had settled in Little Pond.

John Lawless (1796-1871) was my great- great-grandfather. He and great- great-grandmother, Ellen Sullivan (1792-1886) are buried in the cemetery./1
John and Ellen, also called Eleanor, had ten children. They lived on a farm in Kings County, Lot 56, Little Pond, Prince Edward Island. In 1841 they grew wheat, barley, oats, potatoes; they manufactured 10 yards of cloth; they produced 200 pounds of butter from their 10 cattle; they also had 3 horses, 5 hogs and 13 sheep./2

Their youngest son, Paul, was born on  8 January 1837./3 On 16 June, 1862 Paul married Bridget Quinn.  Bridget Quinn was born in Ireland 18 March 1868 and immigrated to Canada when she was about four years old./4  She died 1 March 1907./5 Paul died 16 March 1890./6

Paul and Bridget had 10 children. They were a handsome family (see picture below). They named their fifth child Paul. Bridget and Paul and lived on 50 acres in Little Pond, Lot 56, King's County, PEI. It had a one and a half story wooden house with eight  rooms. Paul's mother, Ellen, aged 90, was also living with them in 1881. Paul was a farmer and his sons, John and James, were listed as "farmer son". /7  The last eight of their children were baptized at St. Francis de Sales Church.

A land plat from 1880 shows the property was across the street from St. Francis de Sales Church, with the school house on the corner of their lot. His brother John, owned the property adjacent to his and next to the Little River, a small inlet off of Howe Bay./26

Their children were:

John Joseph Lawless, born 9 June 1863,/8 died 23 April 1896 /15
James, born 3 April 1865 /9 and died in the year 1890 /10
Helen Eleanor, /11 born 7 July 1867, died 17 December 1957
Anastasia,/12 born 24 April 1869, died 26 May 1930 /13
Paul, born 15 April 1871, /14 died 2 Sept. 1951 at age 80. /16
Maryan (Mary Ann), born 24 July 1873, /17 died 20 January 1896 /18
Margaret, /19 born 14 October 1875, died 26 June 1965

Bridget Marion, born 28 February 1882,/22 died 3 May 1934

Anastasia and Paul both moved to Connecticut and married there. Anastasia married John Deluhery on 7 Aug 1895 in Chester, Middlesex Co., CT /25 and Paul married John's sister, Emma Deluhery. Their younger sister, Maryan Lawless, also moved to Connecticut and lived with Anatasia and John. When she died in 1896, my grandmother was heartbroken. She had dearly loved her sister. /24
