re: Joseph Anthony Helmer and Maria Walburga Degen. "Both sets of parents are from the Kingdom of Bavaria which later became part of Germany in 1871. The witnesses to their marriage were Joanna Gerhard and Michael Meyer of Tonawanda, NY. Bavaria remained entirely Catholic during the Reformation. They were dark haired peopled compared to their Prussian cousins in the north. They sided with Napolean and also sided with Austria against Prussia. They had much to do with their Italian neighbors to the south in the way of commerce, friendship, etc. I found the family in the Erie County Census of 1855."

Their children included John, Andrew and Marie Elizabeth  Wehner.
