Dulohery/Deluhery/Delury/Deloury Research

Dulohery, Cornelius

This is the great grandfather of Loretta Shinners <ShinnersL@aol.com> a fellow genealogy researcher.  She has allowed me to share his picture with you.  She described him as being over 6',  large ears, and an abundant head of hair when  he died at age 87. "He was born in Co. Cork, but we don't know exactly where, nor do we know the names of his parents.

According to his death certificate, he was born March 4, 1839. He died April 21, 1926 in Longford, Clay Co., KS ---just a little west of Clay Center."

Civil War Records

In searching for my known relatives, I came across other Dulohery/Deluhery/Delury men who served in the civil war.

This picture was in a stack given me by my aunt, Margaret Deluhery.  It appears to match the description for John Deloury.

A John Dulohery was naturalized 20 August 1858, in Placerville, CA, three days after my great grandfather's date of naturalization.

Deloury, John (also spelled Delowry)

Born in Ireland, served in Union Army from New Haven, Connecticut.  He volunteered for three years of service on 2 January 1864, at age 36. His occupation was a blacksmith. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion and was 5' 51/2" tall.   He was married to Ann. Deloury, of Wolcotville, CT.  He was a private in Company C, Regiment 2, Conn. Volunteers.  He was admitted to the Armory Square General Hospital in Washington, DC on July 31st, 1864 for malaria.

He injured his left knee while building breast works at Cold Harbor, VA on 6 June 1864. Disability was rated as less than one-fourth. He was discharged June 12, 1865 having been judged unfit for duty for 60 days.

A John Delury, age 21, arrived at Port of New York on 23 August 1849 on the "New Hampshire."

Check Torrington, CT as residence.

Delury, William

William was a corporal in the Company E, 5th  New Hampshire Volunteers. He joined up 9 March 1861 and was discharged on 29 October, 1864.  He was captured at Reams Stations, VA, August 26, 1864 and confined at Richmond, VA, August 29, 1864.  He was paroled at Varina, MD on September 1, 1864 and admitted to the Hospital in Annapolis, MD to Ward B, Sept 3, 1864.  He finger was wounded.

Delury, Daniel
(Delaury, Deluory

Daniel enlisted Summer of 1863 as a private in Company L, 15th Regiment, in the Kansas Cavalry and was honorably discharged October 19, 1965.

He suffered greatly from the injuries he received in the war.

He applied for a pension. He was described as 5'8", weighing 160 lbs. at age 59. He lived in the National Military Home in Leavenworth, Kansas on September 5, 1891.   He was wholly unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of deafness of both ears, loss of left eye, rheumatism, loss of third finger of left hand.

Note this Claimant's Testimony:  "The discrepancy in his name was brought about by his atty misspelling his name. He does not read nor write and he has no means of knowing the proper way of spelling his name, but believes Deluory is the proper way. Different persons spell his name differently."

Delury, Michael

Enlisted in Company C., 48th Wisconsin Infantry; filed for disability on 24 February 1890 in the State of Wisconsin.
